Latest Updates on Istanbul Strait Anchorage Regulations and Vessel Transit Rules (2026)
The Istanbul Strait remains a pivotal artery for global maritime trade. To ensure operational efficiency and safety, the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs has implemented strategic updates regarding anchorage zones and duration limits, particularly for the southern entrance of the Bosphorus.
Key Changes in Anchorage Durations
Standard anchorage periods, previously limited to 72 hours, have been restructured to accommodate the increasing density of commercial traffic and logistical requirements. The current regulations are as follows:
Extension to 120 Hours
For specific anchorage zones at the southern entrance of the Istanbul Strait, the maximum stay has been extended to facilitate better vessel preparation and transit scheduling:
- Kartal Anchorage Zone: Maximum duration increased to 120 hours.
- Anchorage Zones B and C: Maximum duration increased to 120 hours.
- Anchorage Zone A: To maintain high vessel turnover, the 72-hour limit remains in effect.
Removal of Tonnage Restrictions in Kartal
Previously, the Kartal anchorage area was restricted to vessels under 5,000 Gross Tonnage (GT). This restriction has been abolished, allowing larger merchant vessels to utilize the zone, thereby increasing the overall capacity and flexibility of the strait’s southern approach.
Post-Grain Corridor Dynamics and Operational Efficiency
While these measures were initially catalyzed by the Grain Corridor initiative, they remain vital in the current post-corridor maritime landscape. The management of these zones is crucial for:
- Safety of Navigation: Reducing congestion in waiting areas minimizes the risk of maritime incidents.
- Logistical Cost Management: Clearer duration windows allow shipowners and charterers to optimize fuel consumption and port call synchronization.
- Traffic Flow: The removal of tonnage barriers ensures that high-capacity vessels can be managed more effectively within the Turkish Straits VTS (Vessel Traffic Services) framework.
Notice: Master of vessels and maritime agents are required to maintain continuous communication with the Istanbul VTS for real-time updates on zone availability and weather-related instructions.
