Recently, due to the congestion created in the anchorage areas by commercial ships passing through the Istanbul Strait, which is vital for the global food supply known as the ‘Grain Corridor,’ a series of measures were taken to ensure its fast, safe, and efficient operation.

In the new letter sent by the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs on May 9, 2023, titled “Istanbul Strait Anchorage Areas,” new decisions regarding the ships to stay at anchorage sites were announced.

Accordingly, the maximum anchorage time of 72 hours for the anchorage areas “B°” and “C°” at Kartal anchorage site and the South Entrance of the Istanbul Strait has been extended to a maximum of 120 hours. However, the maximum 72-hour anchorage time for the “A” anchorage area at the South Entrance of the Istanbul Strait will continue to be applied. Additionally, the restriction that only ships under 5,000 gross tons could anchor at Kartal anchorage has been lifted.
